Most of the comments in this thread relate to the North York Moors, which stretch from the Hambleton Hills to the North Sea coast; the Yorkshire Dales is in the west of the county. North Yorkshire (England's largest county) has 2 national parks, and is probably the most consistently beautiful county in England (I am biased as I live here!)

If you get stuck just ask one of the thousands of cyclists who have descended on the area this summer as the Tour de France starts here next month.

However you navigate you are sure to love the place. Please remember to pack waterproofs!
