7100 or 80-400 vrll

Hi folks , this is probably a well covered question, but I need to hear it one more time.

My camera is an 800e, got the older 70-200 and a 24-70 plus a few consumer f3.5-5.6 stuff. The question I have to those who use a two camera setup, would it practical to pick up a 7100 and save a bunch of dollars or for a distance  close to 400mm or would the new 80-400 make more sense. The addition of the 7100 would also be a backup but the 80-400 would be so welcome at 400mm on the 800.

Anyone would like to suggest one or the other? I have been shooting cross country horse jumping and need more reach than the 70-200 with a 1.7ll converter but that is really heavy handheld and the days are very long.

For what it's worth the 800e is plenty fast for horsey photography for stop action as I shoot everything with this camera.

Thanks

Don
