Why you don't use IS on a tripod. An Aha! moment.

I have wondered about this dictum for years, as it made no sense to me; and now I have an answer.

The owner's manual (circa 2005) for a Canon 70-300 IS lens says: "When you use a tripod, the Image Stabilization should be turned off to save battery power."

I'd never have found this, except  I bought a refurbished 70-300 IS this week and the "manual" that came with it was an absolute minimum.  But I thought I remembered having a manual tucked away from years ago; and sure enough, there it was.  So in reading through it to find the differences in IS 1 and IS 2 I found this in the Tips page.  Now, the advice makes sense!
