But if there isn't a lot of contrast and one uses a larger area to af on, wouldn't that increase the chance of locking on ? I have found it so on other cams.

It may be. I haven't really experimented that much on the new camera because it has mostly been going okay for me. However, I found with the original G1 X I generally got faster and more accurate focus with the smaller square.

You may have a point though. I should try varying it again.

I use the "magnify focus point" setting too, so that if it seems to lock on, but is just a little out, I can do a quick manual adjustment.
