D5300 rangefinder

I recently upgraded from my beloved D40 to D5300.  I know the D5300 has a rangefinder setting, and I turned on and off and manually focused with my lens, but only got the green dot indicator stating I was in focus.  I was under the impression the rangefinder might give me feedback on which way to turn focus ring, similar to how others on this forum relate regarding the D7100.

I tried looking through this site and online, but can't seem to get anywhere.  Is my understanding of the rangefinder on the D5300 incorrect.  If so, what is its function?
