Under water without getting wet?

I'm wanting to shoot some pictures of people collecting seaweed, where the camera is just below the water line. This means  I can either hold the camera or possibly extend it with some kind of telescope pole. I can't actually get into the water, because it's way too cold and I don't have a wet/dry suit.

I'll be using a dry bag.

Anyone have experience doing this - with the D800 (or a camera like the Sony RX100ii)? Do you use a remote? Will a remote transmit a signal through water? Tips, tricks and/or thoughts greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
