Without wanting to sound presumptuous..... consumer zooms like that are really not something I'd ever consider (and do not need to as I have a 500vr and a 300 f4 and only use Nikon glass for bird photography).

I would recommend a Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-S coupled with the TC14EII teleconverter. But that is just my opinion. People are wowed by the big focal length on paper. However those of us who place quality above all else will simply not consider such a compromise.

I am 95% decided on the 800e vs the D4s! The extra $3000 will come in useful for future glass purchases or perhaps that much fabled D300s successor one day!!
