As long as the customer knows that before making buying, then that's fair to all, I think.

I am letting you "know" that if you are buying from amazon, etc. that has a liberal return policy - chances are you may get a previously returned item. Fair 'nough?

That may very well be true. But certainly they do not state this anywhere.  In fact, they would probably swear on  a bible that they don't, and if you got one, damn that rouge employee that did that.

What a huge waste of time for customers, who have to always be on guard for this.  Shouldn't they have a right to expect new to mean new?  New does not mean "buyer beware"; that applies to used items, yard sales and flea markets.

So it's not only a tax savings, which is often off-set by shipping fees,

Are you kidding me? Here I am thinking you earnest in your position and you throw that in! That is a laugh riot! "Darn amazon charged me $262 to ship my D800, harumph!" What an outlandish thing to say- especially when many of them ship items for free.

OK, I see your point. But on smaller items, I find that, for some on-line sellers, shipping is close enough to the tax, so if I want it now I go to a local retailer.  Not so much camera equipment, but on computer things, Micro Warehouse is a good deal.
