Focus peaking is for manual focus.  You set  your focus to "MF" then when you turn the ring on your lens you get focus peaking.

One application of this is to change your camera to mode 3, and assign the ael/afl button to focus.  I then put the camera in manual focus "MF" mode.  You focus by pressing the ael/afl button then can shoot rapidly without refocusing as long as the position of the subject does not change.
