We recently upgraded our GPS to a basic Garmin with both North American and European maps. We have used it in the UK as well as Spain and have found it generally makes travelling a breeze, especially where few places have roads and streets laid out in a grid.

One tip - in the UK if you are entering an address for your destination, use the postal code rather than just the street address. This can save unintended detours.

Also in the UK (in 2012) we were able to pick up a (paper) Collins Road Atlas either at a fuel stop, book store or convenience store (can't recall) for 2 pounds sterling - less than $4. This is an approximately 11x14 84-page booklet similar to the Rand McNally Road Atlas we see in North America.

How did you acquire the European maps, assuming you bought the Garmin here?
