Yeah, we all want unsealed boxes; it's no wonder so many people have cameras with non-zero shutter actuations and date/time zone all preset. Might as well call it "The Tragedy of the Commons."

Not only is it entirely possible that a lens you're trying "has been taken out of the box before," it is quite possible that that lens has been used and returned, is it not? After all, with the box unsealed, how would you know? But that matters little to you because if you find a lemon, you can hand it over to the retailer who will quietly repack it and pawn it off to some other unsuspecting person, who quite possibly not only will end up with a suboptimal optic, but one that has, at a minimum been handled in-store, and at worst, been used and returned. And if, after a while, he himself chooses to return it, a third buyer will be eagerly waiting in the wings to scoop it up.

Everybody wins!!! Long live the status quo.
