Fine-tuning lens

Hi just wondering...

I keep reading here in the forum how people need to fine tune their lens somehow.

Is that a necessity? because it sounds as if one needs to fine tune to get accurate focusing.  I never did so in the past but recently after getting a new camera i find that my autofocus isn't as accurate as i wished and start to get paranoid as to whether i actually need to fine tune or it's just because of my technique (eg not getting the focus points right, not using fast enough shutter speed,  too wide open and getting too narrow DOF etc).

I'm just a bit confused whether fine tuning is something that is normal and required in most cases...

or just more for people who want 'perfection' somehow where in reality it shouldn't be required.

Thanks for your response. Don't mean to be offensive if I sound like so. But for sure I myself am getting paranoid and wonder if i need to fine tune now.
