The "magic" is in the small size of the camera given its relatively large sensor.

yea uh ok, but in my world the supposed 'magic' of a camera 'should' be the image quality. It's ok for close up shots but nothing spectacular (at least that is what I'm seeing albeit in my short time of ownership). I'm simply wondering if I should stick with it and 'woodshed' some more or was I expecting too much.

Your list of cameras suggests that this is the first compact digital camera that you've owned.   I think perhaps that you can't really appreciate the "magic" of the RX100 unless you've also experienced the limitations of cameras with even smaller sensors.

And I agree with the other posters who have suggested that capturing RAW images and manipulating them to your taste in post-processing will give you results that you'd better appreciate.   In my experience much of the "magic" in really good images is applied after the shot is taken, in ways that are sometimes subtle and sometimes quite radical.
