Shutter speed max with VR?

My sense is that VR or any image stabilization system is only effective with fairly low shutter speeds - oh, 1/50th or slower. However I am really not sure. Moreover my experience is limited to my Olympus OMDs, and I am now using a D800E for landscape. As it's cheap, fits my focal length needs and seems fine for landscapes I have a used 24-85mm on the way. True, I generally use a tripod, but I wonder if the VR will help with landscapes with shutter speeds over 1/50th or so.

Thanks.
