Major error was to use landscape orientation.

Of course, I can talk! I have a tripod but almost never dust it off. It makes a great $300 door stop for the back door.

I already carried 3 litres of water, lunch for 5 persons and a cam - enough for me.

Here's another one to the opposite direction, still portrits would have been the better choice:

Whether what I have suggested is possible or not is another matter, of course. Here in active volcano land in Rabaul, there is simply no alternative for outlook and the light tends to be flat because of the orientation of the big caldera and surrounding volcano collection.
