Help diagnosing IQ using X-A1?

Earlier today, I used my new X-A1 to take photos at my child's fun run.  I was disappointed to see that the vast majority of the images were not in great focus.  An example image is below.

At small sizes, it is okay, but close up, it is not good at all.   This one was shot at 1/420, which I would have thought was fast enough.  Is my problem that the shutter speed is too slow, the X-A1 just was not tracking the kids fast enough, or something else?

I am going to a similar event tomorrow and would appreciate any advice I can get in setting the camera to best capture kids in motion.  For example, should auto focus be in continuous or tracking?  Face detection on or off?  And, OIS set with "+ motion" or not?

Thanks for the help.
