Aperture settings x-t1

I just received my new x-t1 a few hours ago and I'm feeling kind of frustrated. And quite stupid as well; I can't set the aperture. Acording to the manual all I have to do is to set the shutter speed to A and then set desired aperture with the rear command dial. By doing this an "A" shall be seen in the display and the aperture will change. Sounds easy enough but it doesn't work. Nothing happends with the aperture and the "P" is still in the display.

I have also tried to change the aperture settings ( auto + manual, auto, manual) in the shooting mode meny but that doesn't work eather, I cant even "open" that part of the meny since it's "not lit".

Anyone who has a clue? I'm aware of that plain stupidity is the most likely answer but being from Norway, I really can't help it
