Interesting. I can see someone is starting to think about it.

Ming Thein wrote a post recently on dynamic range and HDR techniques that make essentially this point quite clearly. The followon post discussing the tonal response characteristics of B&W film in particular are quite illuminating as well.



What matters is how one maps the captured dynamic range into the necessarily more limited dynamic range of the viewing medium. Film has a very soft highlight knee that gives it the ability to capture many stops of highlight detail, but compressed. Digital sensors are exactly the opposite, but have improved to the point where one can mimic film characteristics at the point of rendering as one sees fit.
