Considering a 500 f4 VR to go with my D800S
May 2, 2014

I'm considering buying a 500 f4 VR for use with my D800e and D4, but if Nikon Rumors turn out to be correct, with the D800S.

I currently have a 300 2.8VR with TC 1.4II, 1.7II, and 2.0III. Also have a 150-500 Sigma ( must be a good copy because it gives stunning images, abeit a bit slow AF ) and an 80-400 AF-S G VR. And a 300 AF-S f4 which is just sitting at present.

I find the 300 2.8VR and 1.4TC to be a great combination. Very fast AF on the D4, actually wicked fast. 1.7 not so much and 2.0 focuses equal to or faster than the 1.7.

But I want longer reach. While I think I'm getting close enough to the 500mm mark with the 300 and 1.4, I'm wondering how fast the AF of the 500 would be with the 1.4 on it. That gets me to 700mm which would help. And really my only interest in the 500 would be with the TC to get to 700, as the 300 2.8 VR with 1.4 and a little cropping is close enough without having to outlay the cash if all I wanted to do was get to 500.

So any opinions on the 500 + 1.4 regarding AF speed, acquisiton of focus, and image quality particular in contrast to a 300 2.8 and 1.4 would be appreciated. Also, I'm sure someone will throw in the D7100 option, but I see too many of them for sale and fellows here have had them for BIF and found them lacking. So the D7100 would need some convincing, but it is a cheap alternative.

Edit: Noticed this is my 1000th post. Not sure the "senior member" tag is all that.  "Contributing" has the feel of doing something; "senior" just sounds old.
