I've been thinking about jumping ship to Canon/Nikon/Sony or even mirrorless (Olympus) because i've been facing problems with AF. I feel it's simply too slow and inconsistent (as in i spend hours doing af fine adjust, but sometimes it will simply, randomly focus incorrectly).

This behaviour is caused by the size of the AF points: the actual 'AF area' is much bigger than the light you are shown in the viewfinder. This has been a long-standing problem in Pentax's AF systems: it doesn't matter how accurate the AF is if the camera doesn't focus on the actual part of the frame you tell it to focus on.

However this problem is fixed in the K3 (it has a lot more AF points, so they are consequently much smaller/more precise), so the advice being given by other posters (ie to get a K3) will solve your problem.
