Tried taking some self-portraits; feedback and advice appreciated
3 months ago

I have an NEX-6 and Sony 50mm prime lens that I used to take some self-portraits outside in an area of shade on an overcast day. I used the camera's small built-in flash as well. This shot was cropped square for social media use, and processed in Lightroom 5. Minor adjustments made to whiten teeth slightly as well as mild iris enhance. I also used the adjustment brush to de-saturate the background (it seemed to help make the background less distracting).

I was standing about 5ft from the camera with the tripod set at eye-level. One of my main questions for portraits/headshots is what aperture I should use. This shot was taken at f5 because I wanted to be on the safe side of getting everything in focus, but I've read that you should use a larger aperture making sure the eyes (or closest eye) are in focus and it will help smooth the other parts of your face. I'm guessing I could have used a larger aperture for this shot.
