Draft manifesto re RX100M3

Urgent -- please comment:

We're sick and we're tired of the half-measures approach to engineering that's been universal in rush-to-market camera releases since the dawn of digital. Sony: take a few months more to get this one right.

This is the only RX100M3 that will satisfy today's discerning consumers:

  1. Same sensor acceptable (but really needs another stop less noise at same resolution)
  2. 24-120 (or longer) equiv, f/1.8-f/2.8 lens with zero distortion (shorter max focal with optional teleconverter is an acceptable compromise)
  3. Pop-up EVF with no compromise over the EVF in A7 series
  4. Touchscreen tilt monitor LCD (see Leica T for intelligent use of touchscreen interface)
  5. Same CD+PD AF as in A6000 or equivalent performance
  6. Retain built-in flash
  7. Class-leading -- not class-trailing -- OSS
  8. 1/4000th shutter speed (what were you thinking? Use EFC. Retain wonderful leaf shutter)
  9. Built-in 3-stop (or greater) ND filter
  10. Detented lens ring
  11. C1, C2, and C3 as hard options on mode dial or as custom overides to other mode dial positions
  12. Ability to set minimum shutter speeds based on focal length in auto-ISO
  13. Ability to assign all four exposure functions to both dials in each PASM mode
  14. Video record and ? buttons re-assignable to a variety of functions, including AFL/AEL lock
  15. Optional auto-ISO in M mode
  16. At least a 5-stop exposure bracketing range
  17. LCD brightness selectable from Fn button
  18. Apps (including intervalometer) and programmable API
  19. Fixes to 1/30th second default and all other firmware bugs
  20. And most importantly: ALL THE ABOVE IN SAME OR SMALLER/LIGHTER BODY SIZE

Sony: we know you will have left some of this out of the Mark 3. We demand that you scrap the current Mark 3, bring it up to the above specs, then announce it in August of this year for Photokina, in stores for Christmas shopping.

We recognize that a few of these demands may be technically impossible. But do them anyhow.

Oh yes -- and bring back the R1 but with up-to-date electronics ASAP.
