Using curves depends on JPEG -vs- RAW and also on your senor and exposure at time of capture.  A JPG will likely be difficult to apply any or all of a curve to,  A raw file is better and a RAW file from say a Nikon D800/D800e is going to be really adjustable -vs- a lesser camera.  if you exposed in a high contrast manor perhaps you don't need a curve or can not get away with one.  I really like shooting with my SONY RX100 but sometimes I notice the files are not as workable as other cameras.  Still an excellent camera though...
