Are 24-70 and 70-200 magic numbers?

Why is 70mm the boundary between Nikon's pro zooms (24-70 and 70-200)? I understand that a high quality zoom cannot have an arbitrarily long range (such as the 18-105 DX kit zooms), but I think 24mm is too wide and 70mm too short, so I'd prefer a 28-85 or even 35-105.
