Lens alignment devices

I recently read and article in Outdoor Photographer that described the LensAlign Focus Calibration System. As I have a 50mm 1.8 Nikkor that I've suspected was back focusing, I thought that it might be a good idea to get this device. Then I saw the high price for this rather simple gadget and thought that there must be a cheaper or DYI alternative. After a web search, I came across this GhettoCal on petapixel.com

Here's the tool I made using the instructions and template provided on the site. The cost is free (except for the cheap materials) and it works well enough to meet my needs.

DYI lens aligning tool.

I tested that 50mm of mine and eventually found that it was focusing just fine - with no back or front focus issues. Glad I didn't spend $70 to find that out.
