In almost all non-test chart situations when this happens something else in the frame will happen to be at the distance that the lens is focussed at, and that thing will be in focus even if the intended target is not. But that doesn't seem to be the case for the OP.

I did another test on a single object not far away, and this one seemed to be in focus perfectly

I focussed on the whiteflower here. To me this seems perfectly sharp, but other people may see flaws that I simply miss so I'm posting this "reference" here just to be sure.
