Nikon D7100 + 18-140 lens, how to know if sharpness is due to user error or technical issue?

Hey everyone!

I bought my first DSLR, the Nikon D7100 last week with the 18-140 kit lens.

I've been doing some practicing in getting big areas completely sharp in focus for practicing for when I go hiking and want to take landscape pictures, but in a thread posted here I had a member say that the pictures were soft and there may be a focus issue, or just the lens being soft.

My question is, how can I as a complete beginner test if the issue is me, or the lens reaching it's limits, or an actual technical issue? Please keep in mind that I have no experience at all.

The original thread I posted (with 2 picture examples, ignore the first because the low shutterspeed played a big part there) is http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3660502

Thanks alot in advance!

Nikon D7100
