Here's some insight into Canon's situation
8 months ago

In Canon's financial statement, released today, the company said profits were up overall, thanks largely due to strong sales of office copiers and printers. It also said that a reshuffling of its camera business helped boost margins.

But, here's where it gets interesting, at least for the photography crowd. The wire story from Reuters goes on to say "camera sales, however, fell by 22 percent year-on-year in the quarter, as the world’s biggest camera maker struggled with the prevalence of high-quality smartphone cameras and a saturation in the high-end, single-lens-reflex camera market." (My emphasis, not Reuters')

We all know that smartphones are killing the compact camera business, but this is the first time the company has used the word saturation with regard to the DSLR market. It helps explains why Canon slowed its pace of product introductions. I surmise there is still plenty of inventory to get rid of before the pace of new products picks up.
