TZ60/ZS40 RAWS eating Canon SX700 for breakfast
8 months ago

Thanks to imaging-resource samples, I've compared samples from the acclaimed Canon SX700 with the mighty Panny TZ60/ZS40. I've always found Panasonic JPEGS lacking, but I generally prefer the feel and "sturdiness" of Panasonic cameras.

This is why it was big news when Panny released its new superzoom with RAW. I have already tried the Fuji F770exr, but the RAWS were awful, extremely noisy and lacking any micro-contrast. When comparing TZ60 RAWS to Canon JPEGS, I've just figured out how refined is the JPEG treatment of Canon. At ISO100, it was equal to the TZ60 RAWS.

The TZ60 has a little edge in details especially in the red fabric, but they're quite even.

At ISO800, TZ60 RAWS begin to have an edge. They hold more details. But kudos to Canon for achieving such a result in JPEG.

Look how much more details are in the TZ60 red fabric! Look how the lines in "Pure Brewed" are distinct and how they're melting in SX700. TZ60 is better, but SX700 is giving a decent fight.

But At ISO1600, and we need it so often indoors with such slow lenses, or at the longest end of the zoom, The TZ60 is miles ahead. It's pretty usable, and quite on par with what you can get with the "bigger-sensored LF1". Now Canon files are completely melting, but TZ60 ones have clear edges, and very fine grain. I really like the result, and this is why I consider RAW essential to have even in P&S: because of the noise treatment latitude, and the better highlight recovery. Look at this:

Ouf! With RAWS in Panny compacts, I'm not anymore tempted by Canon JPEGS

Panny have done a commendable job on their revisited 18MP Mos sensor. the 1/2.3 sensors of consumer compacts are catching the 1/1.7 sensors of enthusiast cameras.

I ordered a TZ60! More tests to come when I receive it.

owning a Nikon D600 with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC, and a bunch of Nikon primes, a Nikon J1 but not particularly a Nikon fanboy, since I have an Olympus E-PL5, a Panasonic GX7, a Sony RX10 and a Canon S110 too!
