Anyway, if you want to understand why, just look at the samples presented. More specifically look further away from the focal plane, say number 8. See the difference between the 58 and the other two lenses?

Now try to understand, that the 58 was designed specifically to achieve that.

There are photographers, who see value in how the 58 performs, and that is why they would get a Nikon.

I disagree. To me the number 8 in the case of the Nikon lens looks like a blurry version of the number 8 in case of the Sigma/Zeiss lenses, blurred roughly by the same amount as the 0. If you can prove to me that a simple smoothing procedure in the Sigma/Zeiss images would yield a different (and inferior) appearance of these OOF areas compared to the Nikon, then I will be intrigued.

Oh for Pete's sake ...go PROVE it yourself.
