How to take external flash photos without the "burnt" look?

I want to start shooting at concerts, or just anywhere with an external flash. Like in this photo

It is obvious that flash was used, but it doesnt not have that ugly burnt out look. I know that in those situations, this guy probably didnt have a whole light setup, just a external flash on his camera's hotshoe. He also didnt have anywhere to bounce his flash off of. How do you get the external flash like this? Of course I edit all my images in lightroom, but it still has a burnt look.

How about this photo?

Do you think a flash was used, or it came from the surrounding light?
