Does anyone know what caused this banding?

I took this picture over the weekend at a bird of prey show at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

This one of my favorite shots of the screech owl, but there is a horrible band running across this file (a RAW capture).  I was using my G6 and a Panasonic 100-300mm that I borrowed from a friend.  I saw this type of band on a few pictures, but this was the worst case.  It looks like some rows of the sensor were interpreted as a different exposure value.

FWIW, I was using the E-shutter to reduce the noise for these birds at relatively close range.  I've not seen this on my camera in any other circumstance.
