Her s110 has the contrast turned up 1of 2 notches, and sharpness up max at 2 notches. The other settings are at neutral.

She uses curves to increase contrast more as needed and to increase detail in highlights/shadows if needed and does some trial and error tweaks of the curve. She sharpens more with unsharp mask. Keep in mind that she doesn't print anything larger than 8 x10 and puts a lot of photos on Facebook, although she has a very nice 20 inch photo of the NYC skyline at night that was taken handheld.

It depends on how Icontrast is set in the menu, if it is ON or AUTO it will preserve the highlights and lift the shadows, in that case you will usually have to add a bit more contrast, I usually add +1.

That has been our experience, also

If Icontrast is OFF then it should have plenty of contrast OOC.

This, on the other hand has not been our experience. But it is probably a matter of personal taste. It could also be she is doing something more than simply adding contrast when she applies a tone curve. It is mostly a case of quick trial and error tweaks until the photo looks it's best. I think she relies more on Fill Light rather than curves to brighten shadows for routine processing. Clarify always seems to help.

Clarify is excellent when applied to the setting I mentioned above because contrast +1 is just enough, and creates a well lit jpg that fills the histogram and has raised low to mid tones, which is where clarify then applies local contrast selectively, to produce a well balanced contrast tone curve.  I usually apply clarify of about 1 or 2 in PSP9.

I agree with the other poster about how this must all be thought of before shooting if you use jpg, but the end result is excellent and requires little work.
