That's a good thought. I will turn off OSS next time I try this.

On a related note, the instructions say to turn off OSS if the camera is on a tripod; do you know why this is recommended?

Because the OSS actually moves the elements slightly I believe in the process of looking for motion to stabilize. If no motion is present as in the case of being on a tripod that process will induce a slight motion/blur. Canon lenses recognize this and do not need to have their version of OSS turned off but Sony's do not.

Okay. So the recommendation is:

1. Turn off OSS is the camera is motionless.

2. Turn off OSS if the camera is in motion.
