I think there are two factions in this thread, both have different priorities when shooting at the 50mm focal range. The Sigma fulfills the need of one faction, the 58 satisfies the other.

The truth is, these are very different tools even though they're similar focal lengths. I think you just choose the one that gets the job done the way you want it to.

A few weeks back there were a lot of posts asking "which should I get, the 85 1.4G or the 58 1.4G?" And I suggested that people stop comparing the two. I suggest the same thing in this case. The Sigma and the 58 are so different, they don't belong in the same conversation.
