What a lovely image, why does it need to be sharper than this? Do you need to be able to count the number of eyelashes at 100% for the image to be nice?

All else being equal, is the image somehow nicer because you can't count eyelashes?

The deal here is all things are not equal. They compromised focus plane sharpness to get this look. Given in most reproduction sizes I use, no one would be able to see pixel level details anyway but the rendering is obvious to me.

Nowhere did I say that sharpness is the only important thing in an image. But to claim that a lack of sharpness in the focal plane is desirable or acceptable in a professional lens would seem strange to me.

It's a trade off for the rendering. If it looks the same as any other lens to you, then clearly this isn't a lens you should consider buying.
