If you want to evaluate the jpeg engine of a camera then by all means evaluate an out of camera JPEG. But to evaluate a lens/sensor, as your post implies you wish to do, you really need to evaluate a processed raw file and disclose your processing settings. JPEG's introduce too many variables.

When I try to work with the image in PS6, usually can do with even JPEG's and get something more out of it, the sample image 'pixelates' (that the word?) really easily. Something (as you suspect) is not right there. That leads me to think the issue is the software (JPEG) conversion.

I am not so sure you (the OP) should be thinking about camera / lens yet, until RAW conversion with a good converter is tried first ( as A.Owens suggests).

Seems to me the problem may more be the JPEG engine. A good RAW converter can do wonders, as you probably know, having much more experience than I.

But...what do I know??
