Photos I used to get with my D800 and Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC is a lot sharper....and now even better with the D800e that I have.

Have you checked for focusing issue, fine tune or VC issues in the lens? Some earlier lens batches had VC issues I heard. It is generally better to take a second after half pressing and activating VC and then full pressing the shutter.
