Choosing a Gitzo tripod/head to replace a Manfrotto 055
Apr 16, 2014

I'd like to replace my ageing Manfrotto 055 tripod (aluminium) with a carbon fibre Gitzo, but I'm confused by the range of choices. Can anyone help me through the Gitzo maze?! (I've looked at the newly released Manfrotto 055 carbon fibre, but I don't like the styling).

- My Manfrotto 055 is the right size (I wouldn't want anything bigger). I definitely want something lighter.

- I like 3 section rather than 4 section legs

- I need a centre column for quick fine adjustments. (I swap between a short and long centre column with my Manfrotto, depending on how low/high I want to go).

- I like pan/tilt heads (over ball heads) and I'm planning on trying one of the four offered by Gitzo (my Manfrotto pan/tilt head is very beaten up).

- I'll attach a RRS QR clamp to the head.

- Camera is a Nikon D800 (no grip) with RRS L-plate. Maximum lens size is a 24-70/2.8.

Many thanks for any info.
