Using the Rokinon AE14MM with Nikon Chip with a D610

Am I doing something wrong, or is the lens not communicating correctly with the camera?  I have the lens on, and in P mode for example, I'm getting a flashing fEE where f-stop normally appears in the viewfinder.  Only when I set the lens to f22 (which I notice is the only fstop printed in red on the lens) does the viewfinder actually display an fstop.  Same is true for modes A & S.

The instructions that came with the lens make no mention of setting the lens aperture to f22 for the lens to properly communicate with the camera.  But when I take pictures with the lens aperture set to f22, if I playback the photos taken, it does indeed seem to indicated different apertures used with different pix.

Just bad instruction manual?
