how does aperture affect noise?

I did some HDR work on shots taken in a museum that was fairly dark, and noticed more noise in the underexposed areas with my 3 bracketed images shot at f5.6 as compared to less grainy and noisy image from 3 shots done at f8. Bracketed was 0,-2,+2EV.

Equipment was Canon 70D with Sigma 8-16mm set at 8mm. I'm puzzled. I would have thought shooting at f5.6 with shorter exposures would have been less noisy than the longer exposures needed at f/8.

I repeated this in a different shot, and found the same result. Why would greater aperture cause more noise, what is the reason?
