I have been wondering the exact same thing since picking up my d800 2 years ago! Mine was a very early model. I had and still have the D3 and couldnt understand why I kept missing with the D800. D3 99% of shots bang on focus even with demanding lenses like the 24 1.4G. I am really thinking of selling my D800 as I still havent solved this issue. It only seems to work well on a tripod stopped down.

Anyone wanna buy a mint D800??
