Tamron 150-600 on Canon 70D: do I need a battery grip?

I'm expecting delivery of the much awaited Tamron 150-600mm from B&H this weekend (ordered 2/27/14, shipped 4/7/14).  I will be using this lens on the Canon 70D.

One of the first reviews of the Tamron 150-600 I viewed, suggested that a battery grip was necessary to balance the weight of this lens and the camera body, especially handheld.  If anyone has used this lens with/without a battery grip on a camera body like the 70D, I'd appreciate their advice.  (I'm very new to DSLRs and I've never used a battery grip before.)

Also, B&H has the Vello battery grip for the Canon 70D on sale ($67.96).  The Canon brand sells for $175.  If you recommend the use of a battery grip, do you have an opinion on the Vello brand?
