Can we read/predict anything with MTF charts? (new 70-300)
Apr 7, 2014

Hi all

Considering getting the new 70-300 and (impatiently) took a look at the MTF charts published on the Nikon website. Quite interesting - it seems to be quite a bit lower than perhaps a similar 70-300 for non-1 cameras!

But then I took a closer look at what they tested it with - and the "1" lens is tested with 20 and 60 lines per mm vs the other lens with 10 & 30 lines per mm - so "1" lens is tested with a higher density of lines. Therefore it seems to be logical that the test would show a lower score.

But another consideration with this comparison - different sensors. The non-1 lens was tested with a bigger sensor! Another way to look at it - 810mm vs 450mm - so almost double the reach. Would that make a difference? Or is it somehow compensated for? Maybe that's why they used more lines in the MTF "1" lens test? Maybe I should compare it to the 80-400 instead? Yes, lots of questions.

Ok, continuing the comparison... took a look at the panasonic 100-300mm - which seems to score higher than the new "1" lens. BUT, in real life tests/reviews - it seems to be touch soft at full zoom. But it is half the cost...

So, all this leads me to the (perhaps erroneous) prediction that the new "1" 70-300 lens will be a little soft at full zoom... I guess real life tests/reviews will tell us the true quality of the lens.
