I'm looking at the new Tamron for this fall, the 150-600mm

That does sound like an interesting lens. I had the old non-OS Sigma 50-500, and I miss it terribly, but I need to convince my wife I need a replacement for it. That is what I used for the juvenile great horned owls in my avatar (larger pic attached).

A pair of juvenile great horned owls. Their mother was a few branches away, giving me the evil eye...
