Wishing to trial Linux. But which one?

I have an old Dell 2405 loaded with 32 bit XP: A glorious opportunity therefore to try a Linux based OS for the very first time. From the scores that seem to be available, I’m therefore seeking to find one that at least mimics the handle and feel of a Windows operating environment. Why - because for a 70 yr old, I like familiarity.

If there is one – which is it? I’m somewhat confused by the meaningless (for me) language like, Mint, Mate, Xfce, Cinnamon, Petra, KDE and other weird words and abbreviations I've seen.

Give me a recommendation please. I am quite aware that some if not all offer the opportunity to boot into a Linux OS from the ISO written to disk, to trial the system. For what it’s worth I also have a selection of blank HDD’s to load one or two distros and it is easy enough to swap them out the Dell.

Regards

Keith
