Some more steely stuff (X-Vario)

Bethlehem, PA. The quintessential heavy-industry manufacturing town in the country. They made steel there. A lot of it. For the Golden Gate Bridge in SFO, for half (or more) of the NYC skyscrapers. Beth Steel also had its own, huge shipyard where some of the ships that I showed in my other Steely Stuff thread were made. The company, founded around 1860 under that name, didn't adapt to modern and cheaper production techniques fast enough, and consequently filed for bankruptcy in 2001. It was an earthquake-type event for the American economy (and psyche), symbolically speaking. Today the old factory grounds have been successfully converted into an arts and entertainment center, with a stage strategically placed in front of the preserved, one hundred year old furnaces. These are a sight to behold:

One of the vast factory structures still standing (empty) - this one is about three average NYC blocks long

Enormous dimensions all around...

Manicured spaces in front of the now dead steel stacks, performance pavilion in the center.

Please expand for a better viewing.
Thanks again for the interest.
