Pg 86 of D800's User's Guide says

Lossless Compressed = NEF images are compressed using a reversible algorithm, reducing file size by about 20–40% with no effect on image quality.

Uncompressed = NEF images are not compressed.

I'm fine with eating up more memory if IQ is 0.000001% better … but Nikon's description of Lossless Compressed (LC) sounds too good to be true.

Is there really no effect on image quality?

I'd just test it but there may be a more-revealing test that I'm unaware of.

It really is lossless. Just compressed like a zip file.

YOU SURELY CAN'T BE BOTHERED WITH A 0.000001% DIFFERENCE.
