I'd pick up an FE 28-70. These are being spun-off from A7 kits and are very lightweight with adequate quality for an APSC body. Prices $250-$300.

I'm a little confused about using FE lenses on a NEX. Wouldn't the 28 mm "wide" side of the FE give a field of view of 42mm when used on an APSC NEX? If so, that would not really be wide enough for my purposes as a walk-around lens.

A very good question.

28-70mm is of course the full-frame designation. The Sony APS-C crop factor is 1.5X, so in APS-C terms (such as a NEX or A6000,) the comparative APS-C range designation would be 28/1.5 to 70/1.5 = 21 to 52.5 mm zoom.

An unanswered question is how well will it perform on an A6000 or NEX-6 compared to the 18-55 kit zoom?
