I'd pick up an FE 28-70. These are being spun-off from A7 kits and are very lightweight with adequate quality for an APSC body. Prices $250-$300.

I'm a little confused about using FE lenses on a NEX. Wouldn't the 28 mm "wide" side of the FE give a field of view of 42mm when used on an APSC NEX? If so, that would not really be wide enough for my purposes as a walk-around lens.

I think the 28-70 recommendation is an interesting one. While it does limit your wide angle reach, many do use Sigma 30/2.8 (and in my case, Sony 35/1.8) as walk around options. You do have 16/2.8 as well (or could get 19mm or 20mm). Not too long ago, I would put Minolta 35-70/4 (a tiny zoom lens, still quite small with EA2 adapter) on my NEX-3 and will carry a Sigma 24/2.8 in my pocket. The combo gave me 24-70/2.8-4 lens as a portable solution.

When I think walkaround, I put E35 on NEX-6 and E20 in my pocket. The combination works superbly, in good light or bad.

I also picked up a SB for some specific lenses, and a fellow DPRite sent me a stash of his A-mount lenses for postage. This included Minolta 24-50/4. With SB, The 24-50/4 gives me 17-35/2.8 lens, and I also have 35-70/4. The small duo hence covers 17-70mm at 2.8-4 (albeit with MF on SB which is something I enjoy anyway).

The 35-70/4 also works like a 25-50/2.8 lens via SB (and again, very small with the adapter).

But, those are my solutions. If I were to pick a zoom, 16-70/4 would be it. One can be found for $800-850 or so.

As for PZ issues, the 18-105G is a non collapsible design unlike the 16-50. In fact, it is also a non extending design (length is constant even with zoom). So the issues with 16-50PZ may not apply there. Although, I do think that there is a market for Sony to consider, a non PZ version, possibly even extending and variable apertute kind that will allow lens in storage mode to be shorter.
